- The cold winters and hot summers are hard on your vehicle's electrical system. A little preventative maintenance now can save a lot of grief later.
- Before going on a trip, a few precautions can help prevent a break down. Make sure your motor oil, engine coolant, power steering fluid, and brake fluid are full and clean. Visually check the condition of the drive belts and radiator hoses. Inspect the tires for excessive wear and correct pressure. Remember to also look at the spare.
- For longer trips it may be worth to have the oil changed, the tires balanced and the vehicle checked by a technician.
- The summer heat and the use of air conditioners put the most strain on your engine's cooling system. In order to reduce the chances of over heating, it is important that radiators, thermostats, belts, hoses, water pumps are in good working condition and there are no coolant leaks in the system. If the coolant is weak, dirty or old, the system should be flushed to prevent problems. Recommended every three years or 30,000 miles.
- Clean fuel is important because of the small passages and orifices in today's fuel injection systems. Dirt particles from rust in the fuel tank or from the storage tanks at the pumps are caught in the fuel filter. Without regular replacement, the filter can plug and cause the vehicle to run poorly or not at all. Fuel filters should be changed every three years or 30,000 miles as part of regular maintenance.
- When you step on the brakes, the stopping force produced by the brake system is 10 times more powerful than the force it takes to put the vehicle in motion. Since brakes do so much work and are so important for safety, the complete system including the front brakes, rear brakes, emergency brakes, hydraulics and the rest of the system should be completely checked at least once a year.
